4)Adding Lip-sync

 There are two ways to make lip-sync animation on Toon Boom-

 Auto-Generate and Manual animation.


You can mix both methods together!




To try Auto Lip Sync

To start, we need to import the audio file.

To import sound, click

File  > import > sound

Browse your file to import and click.

*Note! you need to use clear dialog to use auto detect!*

( No background noise, no singing)




Now, you will see the sound layers.

To enable to play the sound with your animation click 




If you want to move the timing of audio or delete a certain part of audio,

you can click the frames of the waveform and make the change.




Right-click on your sound layer, go to layer properties (Shft+E)




You will get the window look like this.

If you get the window looks like above..

This is not the right one! 



Click + button (window)

click layer Properties






if you click the sound layer while you have layer properties window,
you will see the layer properties of the sound layer.


these mouth shapes and letters are how toon boom labels for the sound.
to use automatic lip-sync we need to follow up the shapes.



Draw mouth shapes follow the above labels.

if you want to in between mouth shapes, we can use that for manual lip-sync later on.

Make sure the order of the drawing frame is following the alphabet order.
Ex) A shape is the first frame 


Note: for your convenience, name your layers properly!
you have to know the name of your mouth layer when you use lip-sync 




Click + button( window) > Xsheet





Xsheet is the window showing the label of your drawing.



the label of your frames probably not match with your frame order.

It is because the number of the frame is following the order of the layer created!



To clean up the label of your frames by order, 

Click the first frame> hold Shift key> click the last frame

right-click  >drawings> rename by Frame



After cleaning up the order of frame on x sheet,

Go back to the layer properties of the sound layer.

Click Detect

Then, Click Map


Find the mouth layers on the destination layer.


Change the right side alphabet to match with your fame order.



Now you will see the auto lip-synced animation.






To Make a change or try manual lip-sync




Click + button > Library




if you click your mouth drawing layer while having library window,
you will see your drawing preview, drag bar, and a number of frames.

You can simplify drag frames from the bar to make changes or add frames.


To play the audio by frame,
turn to the Scrubbing button
